UK singer Estelle celebrated her album release, "Shine" with a party at Paper nightclub in London. If you've been keeping with FG2BH, Estelle's style runt strikes yet again! Also at the party was British-born Ghanaian designer Samata Angel. Samata also rubbed elbows with Estelle and R&B singer Lemar at the BET UK launch party...
Going back to Estelle....
At the launch, Estelle was said to be in good spirits:
"I feel great. This is amazing. I'm so happy the album is out. It feels really good. It's been the combination of four years of crazy in my life." [NEWS UK]
Estelle has one good reason to be happy because her new single with Kanye West -"American Boy" is number one on the UK music charts. However this milestone in Estelle's music career was overshadowed by a comment she made about 'white soul invasion' heating up overseas.
Singling out Adele and Duffy, who she knocked off the number one spot at the weekend, she says: "I'm not mad at them, but I'm wondering - how the hell is there not a single black person in the press singing soul? Adele ain't soul. She sounds like she heard some Aretha records once, and she's got a deeper voice - that don't mean she's soul. That don't mean nothing to me in the grand scheme of my life as a black person. As a songwriter, I get what they do. As a black person, I'm like: you're telling me this is my music? Fuck that!" [GUARDIAN]Estelle has since clarifed her comment with MTV Base:
“My quote was that you can’t tell me that you can redefine soul music as Duffy and Adele because I didn’t grow up (with it) and I don’t identify with it.” [MTV BASE]My thoughts:
I need Estelle to continue on with what she's bringing to her music than worrying on what her 'competition' is doing. Estelle already has the support of Mark Ronson, John Legend, Cee-Lo, Kanye West, and Will.i.am on her American debut. Their support and her lyrical content is golden, right? Thoughts on this whole Estelle-Duffy-Adele fiasco?
