Yet Another Plane Crash in Nigeria

Naijas reacting to this news report
My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost a loved one on that deadly plane crash.
"Around 100 people including the head of Nigeria's Muslims, two senators and a governor have died in a plane crash at Abuja airport. The 737 belonging to ADC - a popular local airline -dived into a field two kilometres from the runway shortly after takeoff. 105 people were on board. No more than five people survived. The plane was headed for the city of Sokoto in the north of the country. There was bad weather as the plane tried to take off. The victims included the spiritual head of Nigeria's Muslims, Sultan Maccido, who was also the most senior traditional ruler of northern Nigeria. His son, a senator, also died along with the deputy governor of Sokoto state and at least one other senator. This is the fourth major air crash in Nigeria in just over a year. It comes a month before the country's aviation industry is due to undergo an audit."

Meet Ayo
Meet Ayo--German's new singing sensation!

Click on PLAY to watch Ayo's cathy song, "Down on My Knees" live on Taratata. Her soul/folk/reggae sound reminds me of Sade-meets-Corrine Bailey Rae. Below is another video of Ayo performing live.
Part two of her performance on the show singing the classic "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman."

Ayo's Nigerian-German
So what is Taratata exactly?
"Taratata is a musical TV show showing quality rock'n'roll songs. It started in 1993, initially shown on France 2 and presented by Nagui since its début. This show has beautiful, live and surprising duets, with short discussions with the artists. Cancelled in 2000, Taratata returned in April 2005 on the network France 4 to be repeated partially by France 3. It is in Taratata that the French public could see, for the first time, artists such as Devendra Banhart, Katie Melua, and Ayo. It saw its chief lighting technician, Jean-Philippe Bourdon, being rewarded two Sept d'ors in 1994 and 1995. In Canada, this show can be seen on TV5."

Quick Facts about Ayo as seen on myspace page:
"AYO is a German born artist, the offspring of a Nigerian father who had come to Germany to study in the 1970s, and sometimes worked as a DJ, and a mother who is a gypsy. AYOs rather unusual name means joy in Yoruba. Her rich cultural background is also reflected in her musical influences. She grew up amidst Pink Floyd and Fela Kuti, the Soul Children and Bob Marley, and many others.

AYOs nomadic lifestyle brought her to live between Paris and New York, two capitals that accurately sum up her musical identity. In Paris, word got around fast, and she held initial solo concerts with her guitar, opened for Omar, the British soul brother and jammed alongside Cody Chesnutt.

AYOs entire album, Joyful, was recorded in New York under live conditions. She cries, laughs and moves us with her simplicity. To accompany her, producer Jay Newland put together a group of open-minded musicians that, with a note on a B3 organ or with a stroke of slide guitar melodiously enter this unusual world, which is studded with a few words in Pidgin, the street language of Lagos, and unveils recollections of gypsy life. In addition to her parents, two other influences helped her set the tone of this album, which very well could have been recorded some 35 years ago. Firstly, theres mentor Donny Hathaway. Her other reference is Jimmy Cliff. Like her predecessors, she strives to naturally and sincerely share her stories and touch others, boosted solely by her life experience and her dreams."

Sunday Naija Spotlight: Igbo Wedding

Igbos
There are three major ethnic groups in Nigeria {Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba}. The first ethnic group I'm going to discuss a little bit about are the Igbos, particularly their vibrant in color and people wedding!
Igbos
Many Igbos are following the Western way of getting married. Some are holding onto old tradition ways. There are two ways a Igbo individual can get married. One way is doing a Church wedding {recognizing their union before God} and another way is the traditional wedding. {I personally prefer the traditional wedding.}

Motherland Nigeria provides an in-depth analysis of the process the families of the bride-to-be and the groom-to-be will take.
Church Wedding

Traditional Wedding
The bride marches into the reception hall {most likely the reception hall is held right outside of her father's compound} with her bridal train {her cousins, siblings and friends}.
the bride
The groom marches in BEFORE the bride with his father and his own entourage of well-wishers.
the groom
Both the groom and bride are dressed in traditonal outfits. Their entourage can seem like the whole village so the groom and bride tend to wear a different lace from them.
Hide and Go Seek!
The bride seeks her groom hidden in the crowd of well-wishers. Many single men will try one last time for her hand in marriage offering her money, happiness and shelter. But the bride coyly smiles and goes on seeking her husband. When she finds her husband to be, she kneels down and offers him palm wine.
Symbolic offer!
This drink offer is a symbol of their union. If the groom accepts he'll drink the palm wine. And together they were walk over to their parents for their blessings.
First Dance!
Together they now married couple will have their first public dance as husband and wife.

Church Wedding

Church Wedding

The Church Wedding in the Igbo community depends on the person's religion. Their soon-to-be married couple goes to recognize their holy union in faith. The bride and groom are not dressed in traditional Nigerian garments but European-style suit and bridal grown.

african american weddings

Below are some similarities and differences that I spotted between the two wedding ceremonies.

Similarities:

Igbo Traditonal Wedding has a bridal and groom entourage. Church Weddings have a bridal train that consists of the bridesmaids and the groomsmen. Igbo traditional weddings will have delicious Naija food prepared by family, friends and community admirors.

Differences:

cake

The vows exchanged at the Church Wedding is not the same as the parents of the soon-to-be married couple's blessings from their respective families. Church Wedding will have a cake. Igbo traditional wedding is a community and joyous effort whereas the Church Wedding involves the families and friends of the bride and groom.

From Nollywood to Hollywood in "This America"

This America
Last October I wrote an entertainment review on "This America"-a popular Naija movie.UAA Official Logo
Ever wonder how the Nigerian accent sounds like when it tries to pronounce American words? "Porrato Chips!!!" The poor pronunciation of 'potato chips' not only echoed United African Artists' slogan, "Bridging the gap between Nollywood and Hollywood" but also mixed the cultures and values of Nigeria with America through the underground flick This America
Written by UAA Executive Oliver O. Mbamara, America's plot rested upon the shoulders of long-time friends Eddie and Ozobio, who are both trying to make a decent living in America. Eddie (Bethels Agomuoh) is a Nigerian immigrant exiled from his country hoping to obtain his US residency through his loveless marriage with his alcoholic baby mama, Anita (Rena Anakwe). Upon his visit to see his friend Eddie in America Oziobo (Mbamara), who lost his job as a bank manager in Nigeria, got setup on a blind date from hell with Jeannie (Angelinah Ada). The two friends soon realized there's more to this America.Clash of culture between Nigeria and America provided the film's strength.
Film director Agomuoh used something as simple as a hug in one of the many funny scenes. When Ozobio arrived in America he tried to give his friend, Eddie, a hug (a customary Nigerian tradition) only to understand it's 'not right' to hug the same sex because as Eddie says, "it sends out the wrong message."The strength of the film came from memorable scenes scattered through the movie. In one scene, Ozobio was on his way from the airport to Eddie's apartment. He encountered the 'joys' of cabs in the city. Halfway to his destination, Ozobio notices that the meter reads $45 and he questions its authenticity to the cab driver (Fanzy). The cab driver tells Ozobio, "You pay 50 dollars or get out!" Shellshocked Ozobio tries to negotiate the fare by saying, "I'll pay you $45!" This infuriates the cab driver who stops the car and after going back and forth they settle on a price. Ozobio gets the last word with a insult, "Nne Kegi!!" which means in English 'your own mother.''
Another memorable scene came when Ozobio meets Eddie's friend Andre (Godwin Nwachukwu). Andre calls Ozobio "Malcolm" because he can't get the correct pronunciation of his name or as Andre simply puts it-"You look like a Malcolm." United African Artists is a non-profit organization spearheaded by three friends Felix Nnorom, Oliver Mbamara, and Bethels Agomuoh. One thing the three shared in common was their cultural background-Nigerians. So they used their background as a platform to their mission-"bridging the gap between Nollywood and Hollywood." Nollywood was Nigeria's verison of Hollywood, America's movie industry capital.
Nnorom, Mbamara, and Agomuoh started the company three years ago to aid unknown artists to be known in the competitive movie industry. Nnorom acted as the technical director and second director of photography. Mbamara served as the writer and Agomuoh directed the film. This America is the group's first feature film. Due to positive feedback from its early May Tribeca premiere, UAA has offered monthly screenings and has released the film internationally on DVD. Because of overbooked screenings each month, there are talks of a sequel already. No official word from UAA about the specific film plot as of press release.
the cast of This America at NYC Tribeca premiere
Pictures of the critically-acclaimed film can be viewed on the website: African Events.com .African Events is a website engineered in part by Oliver Mbamara and his close friend, famed director and photographer, Sir Citor of Golden Studio, Inc. African Events provided current photo ops of African nightlife in the Metropolitan area .
